About Us

The Calgary Compact brings together socially-responsible individuals, organizations and businesses from a diverse interest-base in order to foster dialogue, increase understanding and generate cooperation towards a more sustainable livelihood.

We will accomplish this by actively networking, effectively sharing information and coordinating collaboration.

We are a non-profit initiative, completely volunteer-driven, and socially and environmentally conscious in our activities.

The main goals of The Calgary Compact are:

1. To strengthen a community of socially-responsible businesses and organizations.
2. To encourage sustainable behaviour and practices driven by consumers and community participation.
3. To connect citizens with opportunities to support and advance a socially-responsible society.

The CC is a local network inspired by the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC). We work with local businesses, organizations and citizens that wish to align their strategies, activities and efforts with greater social responsibility and sustainability principles.

Financial support for the initial development of the Calgary Compact and the Conscious Consumer has been generously provided by the United Nations Association in Canada - Calgary Branch, and by Momentum.

Our Board of Directors

We are a non-profit, completely volunteer-driven initiative. We have already assembled a great team of innovators and dreamers to guide the Calgary Compact. We are also looking for other volunteers to join us in building, strengthening and promoting a more socially responsible and sustainable Calgary!

The Calgary Compact is governed by a Board of Directors that meets regularly to review strategy and benchmark progress.

The Board works to help the Calgary Compact achieve its vision, and consists of members with representation from non-profit, small business, corporate, and interested citizens:

Support the Calgary Compact

As an upstart non-profit organization, we rely on contributions from individuals and the business community to support our ongoing operations.

We don't need much, as we strive to be as efficient of an organization as possible, but there are costs we simply can not avoid incurring. That is where we invite you to support us.

If you are interested in making a financial donation or an in-kind donation, please contact us at info (at) calgarycompact.ca. We will update this page with specific needs as they arise, but even small donations can go a long way in helping our cause.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Who runs the Calgary Compact?
A: We are an independent, non-profit, volunteer-driven initiative, started by a committed group of individuals who came together because they saw a need that needed to be addressed.

Q: Do you partner with other non-profit groups?
A: Yes! We intend to work with a LOT of different groups, to help promote their message and extend their circle of influence beyond what they are currently reaching. That's one of the major benefits we hope to provide to the Calgary community, bringing together people from various interests that wouldn't have otherwise got connected.

Q: How is the Conscious Consumer different from other business programs that promote sustainability?
A: Many other programs have a criteria for membership, a sort of benchmark that businesses must reach in order to join the club. Although we believe these programs are great and provide consumers with a generally trustworthy label, we feel there is a role for a consumer-driven process that promotes the best activities businesses are doing and highlights areas that businesses can improve upon. Plus, there will be no membership fee for businesses, so even smaller, less experienced businesses in terms of social responsibilities can get involved. We want all businesses to participate because although benchmarks are great, we want to recognize all efforts, no matter how small.

Q: Do you need funding?
A: Ok, admittedly we don't get asked this that often but it would be great if we did. The answer is yes, we do need funding, but not a whole lot. Our philosophy is to keep operations as community-supported as possible, meaning smart, engaged volunteers running the show. But at the end of the day, we do need some funds to help us get by. Currently, we have no office and are very very decentralized. Some funding would help us get a little more structure as our operations start picking up, so if you have some resources we could access, give us a shout at info (at) calgarycompact.ca
